The COVID-19 pandemic has created chaos around the globe, affecting every area of our lives, from how we work to how we play. Everyone, especially scientists and researchers, has questions, and it may take years to answer some of them. 

One thing you can count on is that Dr. Arash Dini will continue to provide outstanding care to his patients in need of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. In this post we discuss what you need to know about exercise, injuries, and getting care in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Should I exercise? 

Absolutely! One thing that we know for sure is that regular exercise is good for you. It hasn’t stopped imparting health benefits because there’s a pandemic. 

In fact, according to some experts, exercise is even more critical now, because obesity is one of the greatest risk factors for developing complications in people who contract COVID-19. Being fit and healthy improves your chances of avoiding complications if you should happen to get the virus. 

Also, exercise is an important part of good mental health. Months of quarantine, physical distancing, worries about the economy, and other stresses that accompanied the pandemic have had an impact on the mental health of many people. Getting enough physical activity can help. 

Where should I exercise? 

Gyms are opening across the country, but if you have concerns about going to the gym, they’re justified. Since COVID-19 spreads via respiratory droplets, being in an enclosed space with lots of other people who are breathing heavily isn’t necessarily low risk. 

Here in southern California, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. Take a brisk walk, go for a jog, do an outdoor workout, go for a swim, or enjoy doing whatever other outdoor exercise suits you. 

Being outside means the potentially virus-containing droplets in each exhale are dispersed, greatly lowering your chances of inhaling them. As long as you maintain a physical distance from other people, experts agree that exercising outside is relatively safe

What should I do if I get hurt? 

Injuries happen more often when you exercise. Your body is moving more, and so the chance something can go wrong is higher, especially if you’re older or you’ve had previous injuries. That may make you more hesitant to exercise during the pandemic. We suggest that the risk is worth it, for a few reasons. 

For one thing, you can still get care safely. Dr. Dini is a medical professional and is dedicated to keeping you, his staff, and himself healthy. You can expect many precautions when you come to our office, but you can also expect that our office is here to serve you. 

If you hurt yourself while exercising or playing a sport, we suggest that you call us. Dr. Dini may be able to provide answers to your questions by phone. We’re working to limit the amount of time you spend in our waiting area, and we’re taking additional precautions to keep you safe. 

If you’re injured, don’t avoid getting care due to fears about the virus. The result could be an unnecessary worsening of your condition.
